From Problem Statement

To Clear Path To Success

· Framework

Often when I start an engagement with a new client the first thing that becomes apparent is that while they often know they have a problem, they cannot clearly articulate the problem clearly.

To be able to solve the problem for them it is essential to have a clear problem statement, that then allows a clear understanding of the desired outcome, and what success looks like. From this we can then work together to define success measures that drive the desired result.

One of the most successful frameworks for solving problems is the 4S Problem Solving approach favoured by McKinsey. The 4S are:

1. State: Clearly state the problem identify clearly the core of the problem, who owns the problem, and the context it exists within
- TOSCA Framework for Problem Definition

2. Structure: Place the problem and possible solutions within a structure that allows testing of each hypothesis systematically
- Hypothesis-Driven Path
- Issue-Driven Path
- Design Thinking Path

3. Solve: you’ll solve the problem by following one of three distinct paths: hypothesis-driven problem solving, issue-driven problem solving, or the creative path of design thinking
- Cost Benefit Analysis

4.Sell (or Set): with a solution decided upon then the solution needs to be sold to the problem owner, or if it is for yourself you need to set the solution in motion
- Selling your solution with stories

By using a structured framework to clear define a problem, test solutions and then gain stakeholder buy-in the chance of success in any project are given a solid foundation:
- A well defined problem can be articulated to different levels of the client organisation
- A tested solution with clear benefits gives confidence to teams working on the problem
- Both contribute to being able to develop a compelling story to secure stakeholder support
